Raines, Homeschooling

Introduction:

I chose to do my wiki on homeschooling because I wanted to know what it is like for a student to be home schooled. I also want to know how the learning styles are different from those in public schools. Also I want to know the difficulties home schooled kids face, and the advantages to being taught in a smaller environment.

Top 5 things I learned:

1. Why parents home school: I found 3 main reasons that most parents home school.

  • Concern about Traditional school environment
  • To provide religious or moral instruction
  • Not happy with academic instruction at traditional, public, and private schools.

2. About 2 million children are now homeschooled.

3. If a child is home schooled and then going to a public school they may not know what to expect. These are some ideas that can make it easier for a child to transition:

  • Doing a walk through of the school before classes start
  • Meeting with the teacher
  • Trying to meet with other kids their age

4. A lot of students who were home-schooled have no problem socializing. I thought this would be the most difficult part, but it seems that most students have interacted with kids enough through sports, clubs, and other activities that they make friends easily.

5. I found it interesting how home schooled kids are perceived. It seems that most students who are not home schooled see students who are as different, not social, and do not participate in anything.

Number one best resource:

The best resource I found was a video that shows all parts of home schooling. It asks non- home schooled kids how they feel about home schooled kids. How home schooled kids feel about being home schooled, what they like about it, and how their average day went, and if they would ever want to attend public school. It also interviews parents of home schooled students asking them why they home schooled, how they feel about it, and if they think all parents should home school. I give this video a 5 out of 5.

I found this power point on slideshare.com and it focuses on the reasons to home school. It also includes the benefits of homeschooling and what your child will gain from it. I give this power point a 3 out of 5 because although most of the information seems reliable, it looks homemade so it could be more opinions than facts.
