Foods we are lacking and need.




1. Foods that are considered to be of poor nutritional quality are those that are high in fat, calories, salt, sugar and cholesterol and contain little to no vitamins or minerals.
*This includes fast food, processed snacks, candy, cake, cookies, soda, frozen meals and many of the options offered in school cafeterias.
*According to the United States Department of Agriculture, children who eat fast food consume less milk, fiber, fruit and non-starchy vegetables than those who don't.
*If children are filling up on these low nutrient foods, they are at risk of being deficient in nutrients that help them grow and develop throughout childhood.


2. Children who don't fuel their bodies and brains with nutritious foods cannot focus and perform as well on schoolwork.
*A poor breakfast is one that is high in sugar, such as a doughnut or a toaster pastry. This habit should be altered.


3. The risks associated with poor nutrition are many and children face lifelong issues if they don't get healthy foods on a daily basis.
*Obesity is one of the major concerns that children face when they eat poor diets because they are too high in fat and calories, which results in a continued weight gain.
*Other health risks include heart disease, depression, high blood pressure and diabetes, all of which are exacerbated by being obese.
*According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 16 to 33 percent of children were considered obese as of 2008.
*A poor diet also contributes to tooth decay, anemia and osteoporosis.

I wanted to learn more about how a child’s eating habits affect them in the classroom setting and just in life. Parents and schools are going wrong by giving student’s meals that drop their activity and alertness level significantly and make an impact on their quality of life.

I think the foods we give children are detrimental because it not only alters their ability to perform well but it imbeds children with unhealthy habits that will continue in to adulthood. When a child can’t look at broccoli and name the vegetable, there is a problem at stake.

Luckily there are healthy alternatives and if we expose kids to them at a young age they will more likely be preferred over junk food throughout life, which will drop obesity rates. Parents should always take effort and time into the consideration of packing lunches if the school doesn’t provide healthy choices. We need to educate our kids about food and decision-making because it affects them in all aspects, from birth to adulthood.
Change is already being made, and change can happen if we are determined and willing to do it! Simple choices and a little extra effort make a difference on the quality of life and long term affects of your health. Some of the adjustments can lead to a greener way of living as well as a healthier way of living.



SUCH AS:
Drinking water. And NO I do not mean bottled water: Tap water is free and is just as nutritious as bottled water.

Buy foods that are not heavily packaged. Lunchables are good example of what not to give your child. Not only are they highly processed foods but also the packaging is heavy, thick plastic, anything in packaging like that is a big no no. Saturated fat, sodium, and sugar are all main components in lunchables, contributing to the problem.

Give kids snacks! An Oxford University study showed that giving children essential fats found in fish and nuts could improve their brainpower.

EAT BREAKFAST. Children need to eat whole grains, low-fat dairy, eggs and fresh fruit in the morning. A consistently poor diet robs children of the opportunity to learn to the best of their abilities.

*The Dairy Council of California reports that a healthy breakfast results in improved attention, quick recall, less errors and better concentration at school in the morning.

*It can be assumed that a healthy lunch provides these same benefits for the rest of the school day.
